The Day in Pictures

ShowMe

We found a new app for the iPad called ShowMe.  The way it works is the kids can do the work on a whiteboard on the iPad and record their work.  It records anything they write and say. Then they can e-mail the video of their work to me so I can check it and see what they did.  Look Some of the ones we did this afternoon.

Author Visit

This morning we had a visit from author Gordon Fredrickson. He talked to us about his writing and being an author. Here is a small video clip from the video conference from this morning.

No Bully Zone

A kid named Zach was at a hockey  game watching the Capitals vs. the Sharks.All of a sudden his watch started beeping.Someone was getting bullied.So he left the game and waited for his secret and it took him to Simley Pond.Then he heard a splash.Splash!He ran to the pond.One kid was in the pond there were to kids left.Zach used his freeze power on the bully.Then Zach helped the kid that was in the pond and walked them home.Meanwhile the bully was still there so Zach went back to unfreeze him.The bully learned that to never bully again.

There's something new in the class

We got new iPads!These are meant for learning tools.We're going to have fun with these.We were very excited to get the iPads. We got so excited because they are brand new.  We are excited to use them for taking pictures and going on Google Earth.  Thanks to the school district for allowing us to have them!

Assembly

Ms. Gustafson's class led the assembly this week.  They did a wonderful job of talking about what bullying is.  They helped us understand that there are many kinds.  They showed us what to look for and reminded us about what to do if there is a bully. We were not able to get the entire thing on video because the battery died but enjoy what we got!

I don't think that we got this video into the one we recorded.

Tie-dye

One morning, September 30 Mrs. G and Mr. M had two classes that got to tie- dye t-shirts. They used dye and they were awesome.The color's are green- yellow- blue.  They were colorful. Hope you like the pictures.

New Assembly Video

This is the video that we shared with the school this morning.  The kids made this "comic book" last Friday.  It deals with how to handle a bully.  This is something that the kids, unfortunately, have to deal with often.  This is National Bully Prevention Month.  Here is the website to tell you a little more about it.  This Wednesday we are going to wear orange to show that we are trying to prevent bullying.

Morning Assembly

Today we have an exciting entry into our blog.  As many of you know, the State MCA Test results came out last week.  We were all a little disappointed to learn that Salem Hills did not make its Annual Yearly Progress.  When we looked more closely at the results we saw that the students at Salem Hills did VERY well.  We improved in every area but one and even there we showed tons of progress.  As teachers we were very excited to see how far the kids came in one year and we wanted to thank them for all the work they put in.  Last year Ms. Newton challenged the kids to pass in all areas.  She said that if they did then she would get up in front of the school and do a "Happy Dance".  Here is what the kids were "treated"to this morning at our assembly.

This is the video that Mrs. Westra's class did for the assembly.  They worked really hard on it and it turned out great!  They taught us about how to be respectful, responsible and safe in the cafeteria.

Making Connections

Yesterday we read a story called Butterfly Flutter By. We tried to find connections in the book. Here is a picture to look at the connections that we wrote. Here are some examples. "I look for a butterfly, I celebrate for the butterflies,I don't give up finding a butterfly."

Vocabulary for 9-28-11

We are going to start posting short videos that show what we do here in school.  We know that sometimes the way we do things seem a little strange, especially when the students come home and try to explain how we did something that day.  This happens most in Math.  Today we took a simple lesson that we do a couple days a week in vocabulary.  Hope it helps!

Calendar for this Week

Monday--We had an assembly led by Mrs. Steel's class.  They talked about how to stay safe at recess.    We researched about whales on the laptops today.  Ask your third grader about it.



Thursday will be picture day.  The third graders in room 24 will be at 9:30.  Ms. G's class will go at 10:30.

Friday we will be tie dying t-shirts.  Make sure kids dress for doing a project like this.  It can be messy.
Spelling test will be this day too. Keep practicing.

Our First Assembly

Something that we are doing new this year is called PBIS.  That stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.  We have a school wide set of guidelines for all kids.  Once a week we get together in the gym and have an assembly and say the pledge together, announce the student birthdays for the week and learn about one area of the school we would like to improve.
This morning room 24 presented for the first time at the all school assembly.  The kids did a great job teaching about the rules for morning arrival.  Check out the video they made last week.  It is really something to be proud of.

First Day of School

We wrote in cursive.  We learned the letters I and T.    We had fun.  We got to do a game in Morning Meeting.  We also got to stay outside for a little longer for recess.  We learned a new game called 6 corners.  We read about a nature secret. We had fun with Mr. Melde.  We read a book called First Day Jitters.  It had a surprise at the end.  We had apples for snack.

Welcome back!  We hope that you have had a wonderful summer and that you are ready to come back and see old friends, make some new ones and learn lots of new stuff. If you are looking at this at open house I would like you do a couple things.  They are listed below:

1.  Introduce yourself and your family to me.  I am looking forward to getting to know you and that starts with putting a face with your name.

2.  Find your desk and locker.  They are already assigned but we may find the need to change soon.

3.  Explore the room a little.  There is a lot to see.

4. Parents, I would like to ask you to please fill out the Student Contact Sheet.  If you could leave it on the corner of my desk that would be great!
Also do not forget to sign up for conferences down by the gym.  Times are going to fill up fast!

Garden Planting Day

We have tons to share about planting our garden from last week.  First of all, please read over the student blogs.  If you are not sure about the addresses they are still located in an earlier post.

A big thank you to Burpee Home Gardens and Bailey's Nursery for helping to create such great memories for our kids.  We are also very thankful to Tracy Peterson and the Inver Grove Heights Park and Rec. Department for including us in such a cool project.

Also there were lots of adults there that day volunteering their time to help us get all of the plants in the ground.  Thank you to all of you!!

I am sure you heard plenty about the day from your child but we also wanted to share some pictures and videos about the time we spent up there.
